75TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY: NORMANDY AND BORDEAUX

9 DAYS: JUNE 24TH – JULY 2ND, 2019
GO BACK TO ALL TOURS

DAY 1

MONDAY 24TH JUNE
MEETING AT ORLY, PARIS AIRPORT 9AM TO START OUR JOURNEY

Overnight: 5 ★ Château La Chenevière, Normandy

After a quintessential French Breakfast complete with delicious croissants, we will make our way to Normandy (east) to stop for a brief visit to the home of Claude Monet at Giverny. The house contains artefacts from his studio and a collection of Japanese prints.

We will then embark on a journey to ROUEN, the former capital of Normandy, and the capital of the department of Sein-maritime in the North of France. The presence of Jews in Rouen goes back to at least the early 11th century.

During the 12th century the Jews of Rouen were placed under the authority of a local bailiff rather than the expected commissioner of the Jews of Normandy, who may have been Peter of Cluny mentioned as the “Jewish King of Rouen.” The Jewish quarter, named Rue as Gyeus, became the modern Rue Des Juifs. One of the houses at the beginning of the street is said to have served as a synagogue, with another house as the school.

For the rest of our day we’ll visit the Museum and some cultural monuments in the area, and have lunch before making our way to our retreat for the week, the stunning Château La Chenevière.

The Mount and its magnificent abbey are among France’s most breathtaking sights. Moreover, the Mount is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, placed on the highest point of the rocky islet. Known as “La Merveille” (“The Marvel”), the Abbey of Mount Saint-Michael is truly a marvel of medieval architecture. Since the middle ages, this ultimate pilgrimage site has also been called “The Heavenly Jerusalem” and “Pyramid of the Seas.” Soaring to a height of 155 meters above sea level, the Mount is an amazing feat of construction. It takes visitors on a spiritual journey into the world of the middle ages. The entire island is a pedestrian zone, with most of the stone buildings dating back to the 13thto 16th centuries. Typical of the medieval era, the island is surrounded by ancient walls (ramparts) that protected it against invasions. Following this remarkably beautiful visit, we will have some free time to explore the picture perfect town of Bayeux, home to the world-famous Bayeaux Tapestry.

DAY 5

FRIDAY 28TH JUNE
JOURNEY TO BORDEAUX

Overnight:The Intercontinental Hotel of Bordeaux

On our way to Bordeaux after a two-hour drive, our first stop will be in Le Mans, an old town characterised by quaint narrow streets, stone houses with intricate details that date all the way back to the 14th to 16th centuries, and lovely slate roofs common to this area of France. A prominent style in this town is colombage, a French term for half-timbered framing that comprised much of the medieval architectural style.

After a short walk and coffee break, we will continue on another two-hour drive to the Loire Valley where we will visit The Château du Clos Lucé, a large château in the city of Amboise. This place is famous for being the official residence of Leonardo da Vinci between 1516 and 1519, when da Vinci died. We will visit the royal Château d’Amboise and its surrounding gardens before continuing on to our hotel, roughly a three-hour drive away, at the Intercontinental Hotel of Bordeaux.

We’ll then explore what’s involved in the wine aging process with some very knowledgeable in-house specialists.

We’ll then take a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Saint Emillion itself, home to Romanesque churches steeped in heritage, and ruins that line the steep and narrow streets.
